"Um projeto de reabilitação é sempre um jogo de conflito entre a memória das experiências com a contemporaneidade do uso ou intenção. É neste jogo entre passado e presente, de memoria e atualidade que o projeto se desenvolve, de forma rígida, estereotómica e aspeto rude.

O volume existente apresenta uma geometria particular, uma geometria que se destaca e afasta da típica casa minhota.
É notoriamente uma moradia que brinda e valoriza o largo em que se implanta.
Nesta admirável existência, projetamos um novo volume, contemporâneo, onde se pretende uma evidente intenção de provocar ao observador uma dualidade contraditória de sentimentos. É um claro jogo de equilíbrio e tensão entre a forma existente e a forma proposta.

A cor, a materialização da forma ou a sua posição relativamente ao existente provocam uma propositada distinção entre o “velho e o novo”. O uso pretendido é habitacional.
O programa desenvolve-se em dois pisos, espaços sociais no piso à cota inferior, dois quartos e instalação sanitária no piso superior. No piso inferior, cozinha, zona de jantar e sala de estar organizam-se de norte para sul respetivamente.
O espaço amplo é organizado por um volume (arrumo) que “protege” a zona o balcão da cozinha e de trabalho, e pelas escadas centrais de acesso ao piso superior.
Este elemento apresenta-se como um elemento ornamental, dotado de um desenho fluido e curvilíneo. É uma peça escultórica em betão e madeira que delimita o espaço de jantar do espaço de estar.
É o ornamento do espaço social.
O piso superior divide-se em dois quartos e uma instalação sanitária. Um no alçado norte e outro a sul. São quartos simétricos, de dimensões iguais, onde se respeita a simetria constante da planta.

Todos estes espaços, quartos, instalação sanitária e arrumo, são encerrados e independentes. Por esta razão e pela intenção de não sobrecarregar os alçados interiores, revestimos com ripado de madeira maciça – sapelly – parte das paredes e portas de forma a criar um revestimento constante e sem interrupções. É no pormenor de um friso ao longo de todo o ripado, dos puxadores encastrados no ripado, e das tampas de quadros, que não é percetível a existência de abertura.

Sem qualquer ampliação na implantação o programa organiza-se nos limites existentes e com base na relação do interior com o exterior. O espaço de estar relaciona-se com o exterior através de um plano de vidro progredido por outro elemento horizontal de betão que controla a intensidade da luz natural.

É importante interpretar o lugar para projetar e organizar o objeto."

"A rehabilitation project always represents the conflict between the memory of past experiences and the urges of contemporary living.

The existing volume has a singular configuration - rigid in shape and rudely built, similar to the typical Minho house. It’s a building that intimately relates to the site where it is located, a kind of unsophisticated but charming rural “plaza”.
In this context we propose a new and contemporary volume, with the intention to cause contradicting feelings to the observer. It explores the balance and tension between the existing and the proposed form.

Its colour, materialization, shape and position, causes a purposeful distinction between the “old and the new”. The purpose of this project is a single family house.
The program is developed in two levels - social spaces on the lower floor, two bedrooms and a bathroom on the upper floor. On the lower floor, kitchen, dining and living room are organized from north to south in sequence.
The ample space is organized both by a central enclosed storage volume (protecting the kitchen’s work area) and by the stairs that access the upper floor.
These stairs presents themselves as an ornamental element, with its fluid and curvilinear design. It is a sculptural piece in concrete and wood that separates the dining from the living space. The upper floor is divided into two bedrooms and a bathroom. One on the north elevation and the other on the south, both rooms are symmetrical, with the same dimensions, respecting the constant symmetry of the plan.

All of these spaces: bedrooms, bathroom and storage are closed and independent. For this reason and with the intention of simplifying the interior, we cover with natural wood cladding (“sapelly”) both walls and doors in order to create more uniform and abstract surfaces. Even the frame and handles of doors are unnoticeable in this cladding.

Without any expansion to the original footprint, the program is organized within the remaining boundaries, assuming the existing relationship between interior and exterior. The living space flows outside through a wide glass surface granted by another horizontal concrete element that simultaneously controls the intensity of sunlight.

It is important to understand the character of any site in order to design and organize any coherent project."
