Diana Barros studied in Oporto where she founded a studio with her name. Since the beginning, her practice has been influenced by her emotional and academic relationship to the city and its history, reflecting that learning in her work throughout the country.
In each project, the studio tries to convey the social responsibility inherent to the architect’s toil, its environmental and economic impact and its cultural relevance. In that light, she’s been trying to pursue two main objectives: create buildings that add to the artistic wealth and the welfare of the community they serve, while minimizing the depletion of resources every intervention entail, being them natural, financial or cultural.
That purpose drove her to develop methods of improving the sustainability of buildings, comprising every stage of the intervention. On the project stage, there is an emphasis on the rehabilitation of existing buildings as a way of minimizing the waste of resources, while also reducing the necessity of new concrete structures. The sustainability of the materials is also an important project criterion, making use of locally sourced wood in structures, alternatives to petroleum-based insulation or reclaimed architectural fixtures. On the construction stage, there is an effort to promote the reduction and reuse of waste and the efficiency of the supply networks.
Finally, there is an effort to increase the longevity of the buildings, being it though its long-term economic viability, the durability of the materials and solutions applied, the sustainability of the climatization solutions or the efficient management of rain water.
