PROJECT DESCRIPTION
"Theatro was born from the client's proposal, a new society of young entrepreneurs, to create a multifaceted space that would be able to make the dream of each one of them come true. Thus, a multipurpose space emerges where the bookstore and cultural dissemination allied to a restoration zone assume the role of fundamental uses.
The chosen building, a former theater hall from 1910, which was abandoned and had undergone several changes over the years, but which maintained a high heritage interest. The concern was then to recover the identity of the building, the original features of the old theater hall, through an intervention based on the restoration of the existing one and occasionally intervening with new construction.
In this way, in relation to the main façade, maintaining the existing alignments, the building seeks to separate itself from its neighbor through a large vertical glass plane, as a way of reinterpreting its original volumetry. The existing tiles were recovered and slight adjustments were made to the dimensions of the openings, mainly in the entrance opening, in order to mark the original pre-existing arch. An attempt was made to clean up the interventions that were carried out over the years and that distorted the building, recovering its memory, but clearly assuming the current intervention.
Conceptually, it was suggested that there are no physical barriers between the different interior spaces, which are defined by furniture or differences in materials, thus fulfilling the premise of the proposal, intervening as little as possible in terms of construction. This option is clearly assumed in the kitchen volume, which being a new volume in space, it was decided to line the corrugated sheet, simulating an industrial container, in order to demonstrate its character as an external element to the pre-existence.
This type of intervention made it possible to resolve the program, which is developed on two floors.
On the ground floor, the entrance is a mixed area of cafeteria and bookshop. The main dining room is located in the nave, marked by the body of the bar counter and wine cellar, clearly new structures of an “industrial” character, which, together with the furniture, demarcate the paths to each area, giving the dynamic character requested by the customer.
The “container” volume houses the private service areas, as well as the sanitary facilities. The side corridor that gives access to the two spaces on the second floor is punctuated by a large shelf that serves as the main exhibition area and that allows access to the spaces on the upper floor, a wine bar and a multipurpose space, to be in contact with with the immense collection of existing books.
The selection of materials and construction systems was also related to the need to relate existing construction systems to current construction methods. "
