photography by Ivo Tavares

The sky above the House in Santa Joana, a project by Nu.ma, 2021.

The traditional archetype of the house reduced to its purest, most sculptural essence.
A pristine white volume rises from the raw solidity of concrete, where a single square window acts as a living mirror, framing and reflecting the vastness of the sky.

About this photograph

The refinement of the traditional idea of the house reaches a monumental clarity in this visual essay on minimalism. Photographed in 2021 at the House in Santa Joana — a project by the studio Nu.ma —, this image presents the house not merely as a building, but as a sculptural block of exact proportions. The photograph captures the power of emptiness and the purity of volume, isolating the architecture in a silent, direct dialogue with the infinite sky.

Material and visual contrast is the backbone of this composition. The robust, earthy base in exposed concrete, bearing the subtle marks of its formwork, anchors the structure firmly to the ground. Upon this plinth rests a white volume of sharp geometry, reinventing the classic pitched roof without eaves or ornament. Sunlight bathes the gable, heightening the continuous texture of the render and drawing precise edges that cut dramatically into the vibrant blue of the sky.

As the climax of the entire visual narrative, the rigour of the blind surfaces is punctuated by a single, deeply recessed square opening. This glazed void works as a canvas within the image itself: by reflecting the soft clouds, the façade ceases to be an opaque boundary and absorbs the celestial landscape. It is a graphic, silent piece of breathtaking serenity, ideal for spaces that seek the perfection of straight lines and the luminous lightness of contemporary design.
