Casa do Sobreiro I
photography by Ivo Tavares
Playtime at Cork Oak House, Project by Skemba – Architecture and Engineering, 2024
The poetic contrast between the majesty of nature and the lived experience of the inhabited space. The silhouette of a centenary cork oak frames the pure moment of a child playing on the balcony, fusing contemporary architecture with the natural landscape.
About this photograph
In this photograph, you feel the breath of nature enveloping the architecture. Captured in 2021 at Casa do Sobreiro – a project designed by Skemba – Arquitectura e Engenharia studio in Amarante – this image materializes the main premise of this work: the house was built to respect and contemplate the imposing century-old cork oak, and not the other way around. Note the dramatic way the organic silhouette of the tree dominates the left side of the frame, extending its branches like a protective mantle over the geometric and rigid volume of the building. It's a play of proportions designed in backlight, where the leaves silhouetted against the clear sky accentuate nature's rustic texture against the linearity of the construction. But what truly gives soul to this composition is the human scale. The furtive silhouette of a child throwing a ball in the air on the balcony introduces a moment of lightness, joy, and unforeseen spontaneity. This dynamic detail breaks the static solemnity of the architectural weight, transforming the image into a living portrait of a home sheltered in the shade of an ancestral tree.
