Habitação Santa Joana I
photography by Ivo Tavares
Clouds on the roof of the House in Santa Joana, a project by Nu.ma, 2021.
The purist dialogue between the immaculate whiteness of built matter and the ethereal vastness of the sky.
The sharp geometry of the gables and the rhythmic texture of the tiles cut through the organic softness of the clouds, creating a work of minimalist abstraction that breathes light and serenity.
About this photograph
The line where architectural solidity dissolves into the celestial infinite finds here an expression of absolute rigour and geometric beauty. Photographed in 2021 at the House in Santa Joana — a remarkable project by the studio Nu.ma —, this image reveals the house not merely as an inhabitable structure, but as a true instrument of visual contemplation. The lens captures the essence of contemporary abstraction, reducing the composition to its purest, most universal elements: form, colour and natural light.
The extreme, immaculate whiteness of the gables acts as a vast blank canvas, reflecting the vibrant daylight with an almost dazzling clarity. The V-shaped meeting of the roofs draws a sharp, uncompromising silhouette that slices through the deep blue of the sky, inevitably drawing the eye upwards. At the heart of this intersection of straight lines, the classic, sequential texture of the tiles — a monochrome immersion of white on white — adds a surprising tactile layer that softens and humanises the strictly smooth surfaces of the façade.
It is, however, the free and organic presence of the clouds that gives this photograph its true poetic soul. Floating, ephemeral and majestic, above the rigorous outline of the roof, they break the stillness of the architecture, bringing movement, lightness and a dreamlike dimension to the composition. The result is a photograph of profound spatial elevation and purity, the ideal piece to fill any space with an invigorating clarity and a serene optimism.
